Aragonese Castle (Ischia): Alfonso V of Aragón besieged and conquered it in 1423. With its kingdom, the castle assumed a dual function: a stronghold in times of war, and a royal residence in times of peace. In 1441, Alfonso de Trastámara connected the island to the coast with a stone bridge instead of the prior wood one, and fortified the walls in order to defend it against the raids of pirates.
