Yusuf ibn Ayyub ibn Shadi al Ayyubi (Saladin), sultan of Egypt from 1174 to 1193, apparently had an eagle as his personal emblem, which was adopted by several modern Arab states to signify Arab unity, becoming the coat of arms of the Libyan Arab Republic from 1969 until 1972.
