The ashes of Abdelkader were returned on 5 July 1966, and buried in the Martyrs’ Square of the El Alia Cemetery (Algiers). The remains of Emir Abdelkader, who died on 22 May 1883 in Damascus, had for over eighty years lain in rest in the ancient capital of the Omeyyads.
