Eric Gill’s design meets George VI's wish for a more decorative stamp and at the same time provides one which is modern in its artistic style. The Council for Art in Industry was informed on 1 March 1937 that a decision had been taken to use his design for the values intended for issue at the time of the coronation: ½d, 1d, 1½d and 2½d.
