The first written mention of Chillon Castle dates back to 1150, when it was owned by the Savoy family, counts of the Holy Roman Empire. They controlled the route that passed near the castle and led to the town of Villeneuve, the path trodden by travellers heading towards Rome via the Great Saint Bernard Alpine Pass. In the 13th century, Pierre II (Moriana) turned the castle into summer residence.
