After expulsion from Princeton University, Eugene O’Neill spent several years working as a seaman. While he was being treated for tuberculosis at a sanatorium, he started writing plays, four of which won the Pulitzer Prize, and he was awarded with the Nobel in 1936. The 1 dollar stamp garnered some unintended notoriety when Theodore Kaczynski (unabomber) habitually used it on his mail bombs.
