Admiral George Rooke captured Gibraltar for Great Britain in 1704, during the war of the Spanish succession, and Felipe V formally ceded it under the terms of the treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The Spanish nevertheless made several attempts to retake Gibraltar, most notably in a protracted but unsuccessful siege that lasted from 1779 to 1783. ("Encyclopædia Britannica", Chicago, 2023)
